Port Royal Planter's Row Course - Reviews

I have unfortunately played this course more than once because of a convention or golf package. I suppose if you are a short hitter or like teeing off with long irons this course is O.K. I have played it in Spring and Summer but course never seems to be in peak condition. As for pace of play, prepare yourself. I think this is where they direct all the snowbirds who rarely play. I rode in from 15 the last time I was there after 5+ hours.

This course reflects the architect's philosophy that golf is a game of accuracy. Tree-lined parallel fairways are doffed with treacherous bunkers and water hazards, and the large greens are severely undulating. Water comes into play often in Planter's Row's park-like setting, which puts additional emphasis on keeping the ball in play. A prime example is the long par five 18th, where the second shot must find a narrow landing area flanked by water to the right and deep woods to the left, followed by a short pitch to an elevated, well-bunkered green. At 552 yards, this is a demanding finish to a challenging course.

The course offers a different look than its sister courses at Port Royal, with rolling, tree-lined fairways in a park-like setting. Water comes into play on several holes at Planter's Row, and its large and undulating greens require a skilled touch with your putter. Keeping the ball in play is essential to good scoring on this track. An excellant example of this is the 480-yard, par-5 18th hole. The second shot must find a narrow landing area flanked by woods to the left and water to the right setting up a short pitch to an elevated well-bunkered green.

The Planter's Row Course is a narrow, shotmaker's course. Plenty of water hazards come into play, and beware of hidden hazards not seen from off the tee boxes.
