Old South Golf Links - Reviews

"Great course" Played this course on 9/14/2005.I'm glad I didn't read the April review prior to playing the course.I didn't see any of the problems mentioned by that writer.Obviously, significant changes must have occurred since April. Both the facilities and the couse(especially the course) were in excellent condition. I found the staff to be especially friendly(waived the non-golfer fee for my wife who accompanied me).The course is very "user friendly" and ideal for the mid to high handicapper.I'm a 10 handicap and I thought it was fairly easy to play from the middle tees.I played several courses while in the area and found this one to be probably the best conditioned of all.

"Good greens" Great layout and well manicured course. Greens rolled well when we played it. One of the better courses we played while we were in Hilton Head. Some very interesting holes - emphasis on keeping it straight off the tee.

The marshland holes, seven, eight, nine, sixteen, seventeen and eighteen—are probably the most memorable, and difficult. Pearson touched on the different ways you might recall them: "If you're from Ohio, like I am, you won't see many holes like that from where you come from. They're visually intimidating, especially during the summer when the marsh is fully grown up—it looks like you've got nothing there to shoot to.” Pearson continues, "And if you make a birdie on one those holes, all of sudden they become your favorite holes. You'll remember ‘em either way.”

"Old South Golf Links was designed not only to provide an enjoyable yet challenging golf game, but also to preserve the natural beauty of the land", said Johnston. "I felt that this was an opportunity to allow the golfer to experience up close the uniqueness of the site, its natural amenities and spectacular views".

"Featuring towering live oaks, rolling Scottish terrain and magnificent views from island greens, Old South has truly become a Low country favourite. The sixteenth hole at Old South is one of the most challenging and picturesque par 4`s in the Low country. With the tee boxes tucked back in the woods, the green is hidden from view on this long dogleg left. The landing area lies 220 yards from the championship tee box and is hemmed in on three sides with trouble. Short or left is wet, long is in the trees and a shot to the right, although usually playable, will require a long iron to the green. A great drive to the middle of the landing area leaves a player with a 170 yard second shot over the salt marsh again to the magnificent two-tiered island green, beyond the green lies a grand view of the intracoastal waterway and Hilton Head Island. Many matches are won or lost on this hole, where even the best players would gladly take par and move on.
